Creating an email address in Berth

Knowledge base — clear explanations without jargon
In brief

You create an email address in Berth on the page of your domain, under Email: you pick the part before the @, set a password and a maximum size and confirm — after that the mailbox is ready to use.

Preparation

First sign in to the panel; how that works is described in signing in to Berth. Think about two things in advance:

Which address do you want?

For example info, administratie or a person's name.

A mailbox or just forwarding?

Should it be a real mailbox, or just a forwarding address?

Creating a mailbox step by step

  1. 1Open the page of your domain in BerthYou will find it in the menu under Domains.
  2. 2Go to Email and choose Add mailbox
  3. 3Type the part before the @The domain after it is the one of the page you are on.
  4. 4Set the maximum sizeLeave it empty and the space of your package applies.
  5. 5Set a passwordLeave the field empty and Berth makes one up itself and shows it once.
  6. 6ConfirmThe mailbox is created.

The address is usually active within a minute. Write down the details and pass them on securely to the user, preferably not in the same email as the password.

Setting up the mailbox on a computer or phone

Want to receive the mail in a program like Outlook, Apple Mail or the app on your phone? Berth shows the right details beside the mailbox; this is where you enter them:

IMAP

Incoming mail

The server name is shown with the mailbox in Berth

Port 993, with SSL/TLS

SMTP

Outgoing mail

The same server name as for incoming mail

Port 465 with SSL, or port 587 with STARTTLS

Username

Your full email address

So including the part after the @.

Password

The mailbox password

The password you have just set.

Choose IMAP, not POP3

Want to read your email on several devices? With IMAP everything stays on the server and your folders are the same everywhere.

Switch on authentication for outgoing mail

Otherwise you can receive email, but not send it.

Aliases and forwarding

Not every address needs its own mailbox.

Alias

An extra address that arrives in an existing mailbox. Handy for, say, verkoop@ beside info@.

Forwarding

Incoming mail automatically goes to another address.

Both sit under Aliases and forwarding on the same mail page. That is also where you switch on an out-of-office reply, with an end date to go with it.

Getting started straight away without any setup

Would you rather not set up an email program first? Then you can get started right away via the browser. You can read how that works in using webmail. You can also go straight to our webmail.

Good to knowIs no mail coming in? Then the MX records of your domain may be set incorrectly. See domain name and DNS explained.
