Creating an email address in Plesk

Preparation

First log in to the control panel; how that works is described in logging in to Plesk. Decide in advance which address you want (for example info, administratie or a person's name) and whether it should be a real mailbox or only a forwarding address.

Creating a mailbox step by step

1. In Plesk, click on the tab Email.
2. Choose Creating an email address.
3. In the address field, type the part before the @, and select the right domain next to it if you have more than one.
4. Make sure the option for a mailbox is switched on and set the maximum size if you wish.
5. Set a password. You can also choose to let users set a password themselves via a link sent to their own email address.
6. Click on OK to create the mailbox.

The address is usually active within a minute. Make a note of the details and pass them on to the user securely — preferably not in the same email as the password.

Setting up the mailbox on a computer or phone

If you want to receive the mail in a program such as Outlook, Apple Mail or the app on your phone, use these details:

• Incoming (IMAP)Server mail.uwdomein.nl, port 993 with SSL/TLS.
• Outgoing (SMTP)Server mail.uwdomein.nl, port 465 with SSL, or port 587 with STARTTLS.
• UsernameAlways your full email address, so including the part after the @.
• PasswordThe password you have just set.

Choose IMAP rather than POP3 if you want to read your mail on several devices: with IMAP everything stays on the server and your folders are the same everywhere. Make sure authentication is switched on for outgoing mail as well, otherwise you will be able to receive but not to send.

Aliases and forwarding

Not every address needs its own mailbox. With an alias you have an extra address arrive in an existing mailbox — handy for, say, verkoop@ beside info@. With forwarding you automatically send incoming mail on to another address. You will find both options in the settings of the email address.
